Modelling Electric Propulsion Plume Interactions

چکیده

Electric propulsion is currently being planned for use on several future deep space missions. It has long been recognized that the exhaust plume from an electric thruster can induce a complex set of plasma interaction and hence both science and engineering concerns have been raised. This paper first presents an overview of our current understanding of electric propulsion plume interactions and the modelling approach, and then discusses a new PIC algorithm for modelling plume-spacecraft interactions.

Ion Thruster Plume Plasma Interactions in the Solar Wind

Ion propulsion will be used for the first time on an interplanetary spacecraft, Deep Space One (DS1), scheduled for launch in July 1998. A primary objective of New Millennium DS 1 is to flight validate solar electric propulsion (SEP) for interplanetary missions. The cruise phase of the mission will characterize the life and performance of a 30 cm xenon ion thruster and determine how its operati...

Development of the Top Hat Electric Propulsion Plume Analyzer (TOPAZ): Mass Analyzer Design and Preliminary Calibration Data

The continued development and testing of the Top Hat Electric Propulsion Plume Analyzer (TOPAZ) is presented for high-powered electric propulsion far-field plume diagnostics. TOPAZ incorporates a ‘top hat’ design with an analyzer constant of 100 resulting in a wide energy range and a high energy resolution. The design of the electrostatic and mass analyzer sections for TOPAZ is described. The k...

Hybrid PIC-DSMC simulation of a Hall thruster plume on unstructured grids

Hall thrusters and other types of electric propulsion have become a tempting alternative to traditional chemical propulsion systems due to the high specific impulses they provide at relatively high efficiencies. Unlike conventional chemical propulsion systems, electric propulsion devices do not rely on the internal energy stored within their propellant. Instead, an external power source is used...

Three-Dimensional Particle Simulation of Plume Flows From Hall Thrusters

In this study, three-dimensional simulations of xenon plasma plume flow fields from a cluster of four Hall thrusters are performed with a hybrid particle-fluid method on unstructured meshes. In these simulations, a detailed fluid model is used to compute the electron properties, the direct simulation Monte Carlo method models the collisions of heavy particles and the Particle-In-Cell method mod...

Plasma Properties in the Plume of a Hall Thruster Cluster

The Hall thruster cluster is an attractive propulsion approach for spacecraft requiring very high-power electric propulsion systems. Plasma density, electron temperature, and plasma potential data collected with a combination of triple langmuir probes and floating emissive probes in the plume of a low-power, four-engine Hall thruster cluster are presented. Simple analytical formulas are introdu...
